What does ageing mean to you?     Part-I What comes to your mind first when you hear the word “elderly”? A stooped posture, wrinkled skin, aching knees, graying hair, a stick to carry yourself onto, slurred speech, forgetfulness, loneliness or death? How you define ageing is your perception of looking at it. Unfortunately, most of us imagine ageing as growing towards death and losing everything you earned along the way one asset at a time (which is true in most cases). Our society has been looking at growing old mostly in a negative way. And the reason behind believing that you cannot teach old men new tricks is a restricted way of thinking which is confined to thinking what society continued to think over decades. This negativity eventually causes the person who is ageing somehow end up negatively (even if he desired positivity) because of lack of awareness about growing old and as a result society imposing continuous pressure of ageing. No, it’s not that simple but d
Choosing between the two: Yoga or physiotherapy? Many of us often wonder, what could be the best method that we can adapt in order to live a healthy lifestyle. We think of a number of ways to inherit physical activity in our daily routine. Whenever we discuss such issues with our family, friends and society everyone has their own opinions to offer. Some believe gym is the temple, where as some others go for dancing, or maybe boxing or martial arts on some higher levels. But the most common advice we get to receive these days is about yoga. Yoga is considered to be one of the best ways to keep your mind and body free from illness. There is one more scenario where people, particularly patients who are undergoing a physiotherapy treatment often ask about what is better to do while recovering and continue to keeping your body well in the long run, “yoga” or “physiotherapy”? Sometimes people don’t understand the difference between the two, “because physical activity is physical activity

Gender equity in Healthcare Sector. image from google A medical school comprises of one-third of the male population. Rest of the seats are all occupied by the females. If you are a medical student, you’ll relate with me. Girls are in majority, in every healthcare profession including but not limiting to Physicians, Dentists, Physiotherapists, Occupational therapists, Psychologists, nurses. But how often do you see a female surgeon? Or a female medical superintendent? As per the population, a team of doctors must include 7 female doctors out of 10 members. But this isn’t what happens. More females are graduating every year from a medical school but how many of them are employed by the health care systems? Except for the nursing profession which has a majority of female employees in India, other branches of medicine lack female workers especially in head roles. According to a study by WHO, 70% of the women make up the health work force but only 25% are on senior positions

Chapter-2: The Mechanism of Postural Control

Image
The mechanism of postural control As we all know muscles of the body play a major role in attaining both dynamic and static postures but, there is a contribution of some other body systems working simultaneously in co-ordination with the muscles. There is a center governing the simultaneously working systems of the body. Let us discuss all the important elements of postural control and their mechanism. 1.             The governing system of nervous control: The maintenance and adaptation of a posture is controlled by the system of nervous control. The system works on a give and take mechanism of receptor organs (eyes, ears, muscles and joints) giving the afferent stimuli and effector organs (muscles) receiving the command to perform the actions. All that is required for a brain to change a position is an input to produce an output. The input can either be environmental (push, pull, jerk, hit etc.) or internal (brain’s own will to adapt or change a position). The nervous s

Chapter-1 : Introduction to Posture.

Introduction to posture: Posture is a state or attitude attained by the body either during work or during rest. How a person is standing, sitting or even lying is determined by the posture adapted by the individual. But in all the above mentioned situations the person’s body is at rest. Postures attained during a movement or a series of movements also depends on the action of group of muscles helping the body to attain such rapidly changing positions along with stability. The simplest example can be of walking, the mechanism of gait is governed by several small portions of movements making up a chain of movements called as gait. Let’s have a deeper look at what is the difference between these types of postures. Types of postures: Postures can be broadly classified into two types: 1. Active postures: The posture assumed by the body when the person is active. Meaning, that the body’s muscles are at work and are contracting to keep the body stable and to achie

The venous issue.

Varicose veins              “Don’t trust the heart, it wants your blood.” Veins are blood vessels carrying de-oxygenated blood towards heart. Their might occur vascular abnormalities leading to venous defects, causing several bodily problems. This article is aimed at providing some basic information about the disease called “varicose veins”. Before moving towards the topic, let’s have an overview on what veins actually are, and what functions do they perform in our body. Veins carry oxygen-depleted blood from tissues and organs to the heart. Veins can be deep (running below the fascia), superficial (running above the fascia) and perforating (running between deep and superficial). Veins are not as thick and elastic as the arteries, hence they do not hold their shape under compression and might get torn when overstretched. The blood pressure in the veins is lower as compared to the arteries, therefore it’s difficult for the blood to run against the gravity especially in

Dear Cancer

Fight Cancer. Strength grows in the moment when you think you can’t go on, but you keep going anyway. Thank you for making a thousand people stop for a while and have a look at the lives they have been living carelessly. The harm that the body was tolerating, and people were not aware of it, until their body screamed louder. That is a body’s way to tell that something terribly wrong has happened to it. Something that might bring you back to your life that you once lived or it just may not. But we always have hope. To get up and come back. Cancer is an abnormal cell growth in the body which maybe benign or malignant. Benign – which doesn’t spread to other parts of the body and malignant which spreads to the other parts as well. According to the studies there are more than 100 types of cancers. Each one has its own symptoms according to the affected body part. When a person is diagnosed of cancer, it is difficult for him or her to accept what just happened. A person
